Adalah sebuah tata kalimat yang kita gunakan untuk membicarakan 2 kejadian yang terjadi di waktu lampau. Kedua kejadian tersebut terjadi berurutan.à Rumus:

1.     Untuk mengekspresikan peristiwa di masa lampau yang telah selesai terjadi sebelum past event lainnya

    Contoh kalimat:

    - They had studied English before they slept

    - When he came last night, the cake had run out

    - The student had gotten a verbal warning before his parents were called

    - I had already eaten breakfast by the time he picked me up

    - Prior to the proclamation, Indonesia had been colonized by Japan for 3 years

2.     Untuk menunjukkan seberapa sering sesuatu terjadi di masa lampau

     Contoh kalimat:

     - I had read the book three times

     - They had met twice before married

     - Yulia had been to the gym every two days until 2014

3.     Digunakan pada reported speech setelah verbs : said, told, asked, thought, wondered
Contoh kalimat:

     - He said that he had listened carefully the instruction

     - I tought he had change to be better man

4.     Untuk mengekspresikan harapan/impian yang tidak kesampaian
Contoh kalimat:

     -  If he had taken a bath fast, he would  have missed the rain

     - Rina would been the same level with me if she had studied harder
